Plot: The story begins when teenager Luke Rutherford is greeted by the sudden arrival of Rupert Galvin, his brash American godfather.
Galvin isn't visiting for pleasantries, however. He's come with some shocking news for Luke: the dark forces of the world are gathering and now it's his duty, as the last descendant of the Van Helsing line, to smite them.
Luke barely has time to take in the revelation before being catapulted into an intense course of training. Helping Galvin with this task is the beautiful but icy cold Mina Harker, a blind concert pianist who is regarded as the primary authority on the so-called "half-lives" (vampires, demons, zombies, werewolves, etc.)
