Действието на филма се развива през 1950 г. Бившият елитен пилот-изтребител от британските ВВС и герой от войната Франтишек Слама е хвърлен заедно с другите “врагове на народа” в затвора “Миров”. След окупацията на Чехословакия през 1939 г. той и по-младият му колега Карел Войтишек са постъпили в британските ВВС, за да се сражават срещу немците. При една атака на нацистки бомбардировачи Войтишек е свален. Смятат го за загинал, но той успява да катапултира и се натъква на отдалечена къща, в която открива англичанката Сюзън. Когато на следващия ден се завръща на летището, той разказва на Слама за своята съдбоносна среща – първия му допир с истинската любов. Никой от тях обаче не подозира, че от тои момент нататък нищо няма да е като преди…
