Shifting through the mounds of Simpsons games that have been released on various
platforms, even the most hardcore of fans would be hard-pressed to counter the point
that the last great Simpsons virtual adventure was the much-praised four-player
arcade game. Popular due to capturing the satire and characters of the long-running
television series, the arcade game holds up well to this day, but was a long time ago.
Electronic Arts hopes to bring back the look and feel of America's favorite animated
family in The Simpsons Game, and from what I saw, they've at least managed to capture
the look quite well.
Powered with fantastic cel-shading that captures the look of the cartoon,
The Simpsons follows the family as they became aware of their new video game powers.
Jumping between game spoofs of popular titles such as Shadow of the Colossus,
each Simpson family member has different abilities with which to pass each challenge.
In Shadow of the Colossal Donut, which sees a giant robot holding a donut aloft stomp
through the city, Homer can use food-themed powers such as turning into a gummy and
throwing gummy grenades or turning into what amounts to a giant ball of lard and
rolling through the level, squashing enemies and moving somewhat faster than he does
on foot. Bart dons his familiar Bartman guise and comes equipped with his trust
slingshot, in addition to grappling hooks used to swing around the level.
Another level, Medal of Homer, saw the Simpsons don uniforms to save a French village
threatening to surrender. The goal was to remove each of the cities' twenty-four
surrender flags, a task made much easier with Bartman's grappling abilities,
as some flags were hidden in high places.
When we finally got our hands on the Simpsons Game, it was a bit of good and a bit of
bad. The visual aesthetics of the game perfectly compliments TV's longest-running
comedy. But the camera is a bit unruly, getting stuck behind objects and generally
mucking up an otherwise joyful experience.
We played in the previously-described battle under the Shadow of the Colossal Donut.
This is a tricky affair as the giant statue has three ports (on his butt, back, and
head) that need to be opened with some long-range attacks. Once the hatch is open,
you must climb on top and destroy the circuit board quickly. This is not easy feat,
as you have just a few seconds before the hatch closes.
To succeed, you'll need teamwork. Homer makes for a better option as a distraction.
Get the big boy's attention and dodge his attacks while Bart moves behind the beast
and fires. This works well for the lower hatches, but getting the height for the
final blow was not too easy -- again, mostly thanks to the stubborn camera.
We all want a Simpsons game that can deliver the humor and personality of the series
while still being fun to play. From what we've seen, the Simpsons has the first part
nailed down. The gameplay half may need a little touch-up before release. With a bit
more polish, The Simpsons Game could finally top the memory of the arcade classic.
