За този филм режисьорът Ингмар Бергман получил първия си Оскар. Филма е от класическите произведения, създадени от гениалния швед.
Карин (Петерсон), разглезена млада девойка, дъщеря на богатия земевладелец Тере (Фон Сюдов), трябва да отиде в църквата, за да запали свещ на Дева Мария. Разрешено й е да облече специална рокля, ушита ръчно от петнадесет девственици специално за този случай. В гората Карин е изнасилена и убита от пастири. Те открадват роклята й, с надежда да я продадат, и отиват в дома на Тере, където им дават храна и подслон. Престъплението скоро е разкрито. Тере не само отмъщава кърваво, но и започва да се съмнява във вярата си...
Филмът е пълен с образи от народните приказки, които Бергман много обича. Зрителите оценяват по достойнство дълбочината на моралните и религиозни разсъждения на режисьора, емоционалната мощ на разказа и играта на актьорите, символическата образност, а също така и изразителната работа на оператора Свен Нюквист в пресъздаването на средата, атмосферата, психологическото състояние на персонажите.
Награда ФИПРЕССИ. Оскар (1961 г.) за най-добър чуждоезичен филм, номинация за Оскар за най-добър дизайн на костюмите (Марик Вос).
