Release Notes:
There's been 10 years and a whole lot of breaking up and making up between Wet
Wet Wet's last album and this new set, though I'm not sure it's worth the wait.
The opener Run seems to be attempting a guitar-heavy James Bond theme, but
proceedings soon settle into a default mode of mellow crooning, easy rhythms,
lush arrangements and rather too pristine production.
So we get soppy ballads like Real Life, lazy Latin lounge stylings in Eyes Wide
Open and a Roy Orbison-style slice of pop melodrama with In Every Heart (A Fire
Burns).
Elsewhere the perma-smiling Marti Pellow sings about a New Age Sacrifice
(wozzat?) and, mustering all that life experience, poses the question What Do
You Know?, failing, at least on the basis of the lyric, to come up with much of
an answer.
There are some very nice strings buoying up the best songs, and the Wets have
not lost their ear for a pop hook, but this is not an album which seems as if it
desperately needed to be made.
